Former SEDA boss lands new gig
Steven W. Weathers, who resigned earlier this year as president of the Savannah Economic Development Authority, has been tapped to be the next president and CEO of the World Trade Center San Diego.
San Diego board chairman Bruce Hueners announced that the board approved Weathers’ selection at its meeting Wednesday. Weathers assumes the position effective immediately, but will use the Thanksgiving break to relocate from Savannah, Hueners said.
“We are fortunate to have someone with Steve’s spot-on experience, background, drive and commitment to succeed (former president) Bella Heule,” Hueners said. “With his extensive, nationwide experience in economic development, as well as intimate knowledge of San Diego, we are confident he will take the organization to the next level and benefit our entire region.”
From 1990 to 2001, Weathers was vice president of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp.
During Weathers’ tenure with SEDA, he was instrumental in bringing the World Trade Center to Savannah.
Georgia jobless rate down to 8.7 percent
ATLANTA — Georgia labor officials say the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 8.7 percent in October, down from 9 percent in September
That compares to a jobless rate of 9.7 percent a year ago.
The new figures were announced early Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.
Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the jobless rate declined because the state saw an increase of 36,000 new jobs.
Butler said that is the largest September-to-October job increase ever. He said the job growth pushed the number of jobs in October to the highest level in any month since December 2008.
