Memorial spine programs recognized

The spinal fusion and the microdiscectomy programs at Memorial University Medical Center have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval by meeting national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

These certifications recognize both programs for continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s standards.

“The Joint Commission analyzes what we do before, during and after surgery to ensure that every patient receives proven, evidence-based care,” said spine surgeon Dr. Raphael Roybal.

Memorial took part in an on-site review in January.

Piano showdown raises money for nonprofit

A piano showdown featuring jazz pianists Bob Seeley and John Cocuzzi, held at the Plantation Club at The Landings on Skidaway Island, raised more than $23,000 for Park Place Outreach – Youth Emergency Shelter.

Several local businesses donated goods and services to the evening’s silent auction. Among the items up for grabs were a diamond bracelet from International Diamond Center; gift certificates from restaurants including 45 Bistro, Joe’s Homemade Café, Bonefish Grill and the Olde Pink House; a wine-tasting package from Johnnie Ganem’s; a gift basket from Tupperware; and artwork from Tiffani Taylor Art Gallery, Ruth George and Dave Ryden.

Raptor center gets Gulfstream grant

STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q. Ball, Jr. Raptor Center received a donation of $10,000 to its Freedom Fund for Excellence from Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. in Savannah.

The gift honors Gulfstream’s Pres Henne, who is retiring as senior vice president of programs, engineering and test. The money will be used to support the center’s ongoing wildlife education programs.

The nearly 25-year-old center is the only such facility located in the middle of a university campus and is home to three bald eagles: Freedom, Glory and its newest eagle, Franklin.
