New baking and pastry program at Savannah Tech

Savannah Technical College’s Culinary Institute of Savannah has created a new culinary baking and pastry program after the associate degree and diploma were OK’d by the Technical College System of Georgia earlier this month.

“This program offers a tremendous opportunity to train our students to achieve high standards and quality baking and pastry skills, which will benefit area hotels and restaurants,” said culinary arts department head and instructor Chef Jean Vendeville.

The program, based on curriculum from the American Culinary Federation, includes foundation courses such as fundamentals of culinary arts, culinary safety/sanitation, principles of cooking, baking principles and principles of culinary leadership. Courses specific to the program include baking science, European cakes and tortes, artisan/specialty bread, hot/cold-plated desserts, cake design/decorating, confection artistry, chocolate artistry and dessert/bread retail production with nutrition in baking.

Pooler’s upcoming BBQ and music event

Savannah Tire Brake & Alignment Centers has committed to a two-year agreement to be the signature sponsor for the Flyin’ Pig BBQ & Music Festival presented by the Pooler Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. This year’s event is Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.

Poverty simulation planned for Aug. 23

Step Up Savannah’s next poverty simulation, open to the public, is scheduled for Aug. 23 at the Savannah Civic Center.

The simulation requires groups of 35 to 75 people to assume the roles of families living in poverty.

The simulation, hosted by Step Up and Hands On Savannah of the United Way of the Coastal Empire, will take place from 2-4:30 p.m.

More than 19 percent of Chatham County families live at or below the poverty level.

Savannah Tech to offer refrigeration sessions

The professional continuing education program at Savannah Technical College will present two sessions on refrigeration basics in the Industrial Technology Building at 5717 White Bluff Road in September.

Refrigeration Basics I explains how refrigeration systems work. It will be offered from 8-11 a.m. on Sept. 21 for $200 per person.

Refrigeration Basics II will provide hands-on training on ‘live’ units. The course will be offered from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Sept. 28 at $250 per person.
