Buy Local to hear insurance presentation

Dan Pavlin of Bernard Williams and Co. will discuss what every business needs to know about insurance during the monthly Buy Local meeting Thursday at the Pirates’ House on East Broad Street.

New DQ Grill & Chill restaurant opens

Dairy Queen has opened a new DQ Grill & Chill restaurant at 7100 Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah. The 2,510-square-foot restaurant employs 45 people.

“We are excited to open our fourth DQ Grill & Chill restaurant in Georgia and welcome the community in to enjoy our full menu of cravable food items, cool treats and Orange Julius specialty fruit smoothies and drinks,” said restaurant operator Dana Sanders.

The restaurant can seat 52 guests inside, 24 outside and offers a drive-thru window. It serves lunch and dinner and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Atlantic Coast Financial agrees to merger

Jacksonville-based Atlantic Coast Financial Corp. is set to merge with Bond Street Holdings Inc.

Atlantic Coast Financial has about a dozen branch bank offices from Waycross through Jacksonville and agreed to the merger. Bond Street, based in Miami, will acquire the common stock of Atlantic Coast, which has assets of about $777 million. The proposed merger has to undergo review by federal regulators and Atlantic Coast’s 1,600 stockholders, company spokesman Patrick Watson said.

The Atlantic Coast locations will operate under the name of Florida Community Bank, a subsidiary of Bond Street that has $3.2 billion in assets. Ross Lovern, spokesman for Bond Street, said there are no plans to close any of those offices at this time.

Savannah Tech picked for Pell Grant test program

The U.S. Department of Education has selected Savannah Technical College to offer Pell Grant funding to qualified students enrolled in selected short-term certificate programs such as commercial truck driving.

This experiment is designed to help legislators determine the impact of expanding Pell Grant eligibility for students enrolled in short-term, career-oriented programs.

To be considered, students must complete a Savannah Tech admissions application, be accepted to the commercial trucking driving program, complete the 2012-13 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and submit a Pell Grant Experiment Consent Form before March 1.
