Senate passes exemptions for aerospace engineers
ATLANTA — The state Senate sent legislation to the governor Tuesday designed to improve the state’s chances for becoming a commercial space port and boosting the existing aviation industry.
It voted 33-1 for House Bill 18 by Rep. Jason Spencer, R-Woodbine, which would exempt engineers in the aviation and aerospace fields from the state’s requirement to be licensed.
The requirement hasn’t been enforced for more than a decade because no industry trade group provides the curriculum and testing as is done for other types of engineering branches like electrical, civil and mechanical.
The only state that exempts aviation and aerospace engineers is Florida, home of the Kennedy Space Center.
Spencer represents Camden County where local leaders hope to establish a commercial space port. The state is already home to Delta Air Lines, the world’s busiest airport and aircraft makers Gulfstream Aerospace, Lockheed-Martin and Thrush Aircraft.
The House passed HB 18 earlier this month. It will become law if Gov. Nathan Deal signs it.
