Smith Brothers reopening on Liberty Street

Smith Brothers Butcher Shop: Quality Meats and Provisions will hold its grand opening at 535 E. Liberty St. at 9:30 a.m. this Thursday, relaunching the legacy Savannah grocer as a specialty wine, meat and cheese shop.

Smith Brothers began as a butcher stall run by brothers Harry and Leon Smith nearly 91 years ago in the old City Market. The latest iteration of the store marks a return to its roots in downtown Savannah, according to a press release.

The local grocer had been operating as the Village Market at the Landings on Skidaway Island since 1993 but was displaced by the new Publix late last year.

“I worked the Smith Brothers store on 41st and Habersham for many years,” said owner Robert Anderson. “It’s a great feeling to be back in downtown Savannah.”

The new store will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Parking is available next to the building.

South Korea-based firm to locate in Jenkins County

Wells Lighting, a South Korea-based light manufacturer, will invest $30 million over the next two years to locate its first North American headquarters in Millen and create more than 200 jobs, Gov. Nathan Deal announced Monday.

Wells Lighting, established in 2008, produces general lighting/streetlights, industrial lighting, solar street lights and smart control system lights.

The company will move into a 92,000-square-foot building that will house the company’s headquarters, research and development initiatives and manufacturing operations for its new LED lighting production line.

“After much consideration, Georgia was the ideal place for us to locate our U.S. operations,” said Dae Woo Kim, Wells Lighting’s USA CEO and chairman.

Georgia has had representation in South Korea since 1985, and it was one of Georgia’s top three investor nations last year.
