Morning News program will benefit nonprofits
The Savannah Morning News and savannahnow.com are introducing a unique program of philanthropy to benefit local nonprofits.
Nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations are invited to any one of three informational sessions scheduled to outline details of the program, how it has worked in other communities and how it can provide valuable media space to get your message to the public.
The three sessions are being held to ensure everyone has an opportunity to attend one. They’re scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12; Thursday, Nov. 13; or Friday, Nov. 14. Each session begins at 8 a.m. and will last about an hour.
The sessions will be held in the Savannah Morning News auditorium, 1375 Chatham Parkway. Call 912-652-0236 to reserve your seat or register online at givebackbucks.eventbrite.com.
Parker’s golf outing raises cash for schools
The 2014 Parker’s Fueling the Community Charity Golf Tournament, held Oct. 28 at The Club at Savannah Harbor, raised $70,708 to benefit area schools.
The tournament attracted 144 players from across the region. Proceeds will go to Georgia and South Carolina schools in areas where Parker’s operates convenience stores.
The winning team at the second annual golf tournament was Team Monster, which included Jeff Chadwick, Jeff Blacker, Billy Weyer and Roger Ghee.
“I’m a firm believe that education is the tide that floats all ships,” said Greg Parker, president and CEO of Parker’s. “As education levels rise, so does the health and well-being of the communities where we operate our stores.”

S Bank holds grand opening for new retail branch
S Bank held a grand opening for its new Savannah branch on Thursday, attended by Mayor Edna Jackson and members of the local business community.
The bank was founded in 1943 in Glennville and also has a location in Hinesville. The new branch is located at 120 Drayton St. in the building formerly occupied by Sea Island Bank.
A group of local business leaders first bought a controlling stake of the financial institution in 2008 and opened a loan production office downtown in November 2012, with plans to expand its services later.
The bank handles approximately $100 million in assets and is a full-service bank, specializing in SBA loans.
“We’re locally owned, and our board is primarily Savannahians with strong representation from Tattnall County,” said Mark Smith, chairman of S-Bank. “All decisions are local.”
