Tybee building gets historic designation
Beachview Bed and Breakfast on Tybee Island, formerly known as Bordley Cottage, has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The two-story building on Butler Avenue was built in 1915 by Charles R. Bordley, an officer in the Savannah Guano Co. as a private residence. After his death, his widow, Ophelia Bordley Wallis, opened the home as a boarding house.
It was the first boarding house on the island with running water to all of the rooms.
In 1944, William and Mary Garvin bought the cottage and transformed it into a four-season operation called the Beachview Hotel.
In 2011, Karen and Frank Kelly purchased the building, which was operating as the Hunter House Inn and Restaurant, and have done extensive renovations.
