The Rotary Club of Savannah broke ground Monday afternoon for a new $342,000 all-accessible playground in Forsyth Park.

The money was raised through internal sponsorships, a grant from the Alan S. Gaynor Fund and AMBUCS, and through the Herb Traub Fund.

The playground near the park’s band shell will be accessible to all children, including those who have wheelchair limitations and other specialized conditions. Its design includes nine slides, 16 climbers, and eight swings.

The equipment can support as many as 300 children, and the ground will be covered with rubber matting and mulch.

“The Rotary Club of Savannah has a long history of giving back to our community,” said club president Holden Hayes. “To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the founding of our club, we have spent a tremendous amount of time researching and coming up with an all-accessible playground to be used by all the children of Savannah.

“With a total cost of over $340,000, this one of a kind playground, will be able to benefit all children of our community, including those with special needs, for years to come. We are pleased to be able to give this to the city of Savannah and wish to thank all of our sponsors and contributors.”

The Rotary Club of Savannah met for the first time on Jan. 5, 1914, at the DeSoto Hotel.
