Company sued for dismissal of disabled worker

GAF Materials Corp., a roofing materials manufacturer headquartered in Wayne, N.J., unlawfully terminated a disabled worker from its Savannah facility when it refused to allow him to exercise his seniority rights to “bump” junior employees, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charged in a lawsuit.

The lawsuit contends GAF’s contract with the United Steelworkers included a provision that allowed senior employees to remain employed by “bumping” less senior employees in any layoff situation.

Irvin Carter, who had lost his right hand in an accident at the facility nine years earlier, was denied the right to bump junior employees when the company cut staff in 2012.

The EEOC is seeking back pay and compensatory and punitive damages for Carter.

The Gold Crown award, the highest designation presented by RCI, is based on a 12-month compilation of guest assessments. The Coral Resorts properties exceeded Gold Crown qualifications in every category that the guest survey tracks. This year’s award marks the eleventh consecutive year the Coral Resorts family of properties have been recognized.

“This recognition is a testament to our staff and their unrelenting commitment to ‘gold-standard’ customer satisfaction,” said Coral Resorts president Dean Pierce.
