Bus association picks boat parade as top 100 event
The American Bus Association has designated the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights, to be held on Nov. 28, 2015, on the Savannah River, as one of the top 100 events in North America for 2015.
The association says the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights offers excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers.
The top 100 list will be published as a supplement to the September/October issue of Destinations magazine.
“The real news here is that the Boat Parade of Lights has been recognized as a potential magnet for tourism dollars at a time when re-energizing domestic tourism is so important to our spirit and our economy,” said Peter J. Pantuso, bus association president and CEO.
The association’s 2015 Top 100 Events Selection Committee selected the boat parade from hundreds of event nominations submitted by its members.
The top 100 events list is available online at www.buses.org/Top100.

Healthy Savannah, in collaboration with the city of Savannah, has announced the six recipients of this year’s Healthy Communities Mini Grant Program, marking the third year the grants have been awarded.
A total of $5,000 will be distributed among the winners to fund initiatives that result in sustainable environmental and/or policy change that promotes physical activity or improves nutrition for the community.
The grants will go to Design for Ability, Girls on the Run, Memorial Health, Mercer University School of Medicine student Megan Papierniak, Savannah Urban Garden Alliance and Savannah Food Policy Council.
Their priorities include increasing the number of active community environments, providing access to health-promoting foods and increasing the number of people who have access to low cost or free recreational opportunities.
Latin Chicks opens second restaurant
Mary Githens and Martin Ruiz, who have operated the Latin Chicks restaurant in Oglethorpe Mall since 2009, will open a second restaurant Tuesday at 5205 Waters Ave.
The new location will offer an outside deck, seating for 64 people and a full bar.
As part of their grand opening celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the owners have chosen the Second Harvest Food Bank as their charity of choice and are asking guests to bring two cans of food to donate.
The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live music by a Puerto-Rican/Dominican Latin band, door prizes from local merchants and a sampling of latin cuisine.
