New container freight station opens here

Troy Container Line, one the world’s largest American-owned non-vessel operating common carriers, opened a new container freight station June 1 at 122 Norwest Court, just eight miles from the Port of Savannah.

The 175,000-square-foot facility includes 47 dock doors and an approved security system.

A non-vessel operating common carrier — or NVOCC — is a shipment consolidator or freight forwarder who doesn’t own any vessels but functions as a carrier by issuing its own bills of lading or air waybills and assuming responsibility for shipments.

The new facility marks Troy’s 21st warehouse location in the continental U.S. and will serve the local market as well as customers across six continents, according to Patricia L. Fitzgerald, the company’s chief operating officer for exports.

“At Troy Container Line, we continually evolve to meet the needs of our growing client base,” Fitzgerald said. “In conjunction with our Charlotte, N.C., office and Miami warehouse, the Savannah container freight station solidifies Troy Container Line’s growing presence in the South Atlantic United States.”

Founded in 1984, Troy has become one of the largest companies in its industry, serving more than 2,000 customers with 700 destinations on six continents. Fitzgerald said founder Michael Troy based the business on the service his company could provide shippers compared to steamship lines.

In addition to the Savannah facility, Troy recently announced a new Chicago to Rotterdam service, as well as a direct consolidation service to Liverpool and Manchester, England.

Coastal Logistics growing

Sarah Baker of the Memphis Daily News reports that Savannah-based third-party logistics firm Coastal Logistics Group Inc. is seeing rapid expansion in the Southeast Memphis industrial market after its local entrance less than a year ago.

CLG has signed a 50,000-square-foot lease extension, doubling the space it leased in June 2011.

Founded in 2004, CLG provides distribution, contract logistics, specialized export packing and crating, and project cargo for exporters. The company serves the Southeast gateway through locations in Savannah, Norfolk and Memphis.

Twice named to Inc. Magazine’s 500/5000 list as one of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the U.S., CLG in March announced a partnership with Houston-based Port Logistics Group to extend its geographic reach and service offerings.

A month for records

In his monthly Logistics Market Snapshot, Page Siplon usually highlights his favorite “encouraging statistics.”

In his May snapshot, however, the executive director of the Savannah-based Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics was struck with how many record-setting events he’d seen in the last months and decided to focus on those instead.

After all, what can be more encouraging than the setting of all-time records?

Here’s a sampling:

• The U.S. set records for both import and export volumes, which increased 5 percent and 3 percent respectively in March.

• Exports of U.S. poultry — one of the top industries in Georgia — also set records for the first quarter of this year. Overall, U.S. poultry meat export volumes climbed 14 percent over the first quarter of 2011. That’s 787,000 tons valued at over $796 million.

• U.S seaports set the record for TEU imports in April — up 9.2 percent in over March. A TEU is a twenty-foot equivalent unit. The most common container size is 40 feet long and equals two TEUs.

• The active container ship fleet reached a record capacity of 15 million TEU’s. This is driven by deliveries of new vessels and a sharp reduction in the number of laid-up ships. Sixty-two new container ships have been delivered since January, 23 of which exceeded 10,000 TEU’s each.

• Both CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads brought in record first quarter 2012 profits, with earnings up 13.7 percent and 26 percent, respectively, year-over-year.
