Apprentice program recruiting for job training class
Step Up Savannah’s Chatham Apprentice Program is recruiting for the next “E3: Educate, Empower, Employ” job training program, scheduled to start on May 19 and run through June 12.
The program is open to men and women interested in enhancing their basic employment skills.
The training is free through a partnership among Chatham County, Step Up Savannah Inc. and Savannah Technical College. Those without a high school diploma or GED are encouraged to apply, but the program is open to anyone who is unemployed or underemployed.
Graduates receive help with their job search and one-on-one coaching.

Hussey, Gay named top 500 design firm
For the 10th year in a row, Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung has been named to Engineering News Record’s Top 500 Design Firms, rising 63 places from the 2012 rankings for Engineering/Architecture services.
HGBD was one of 14 Georgia firms to be recognized. The firm’s ranking was derived from the combination of domestic and international Engineering/Architectural revenues in core market segments including water/wastewater, transportation, industrial/manufacturing, health care, higher education and commercial.
Core rankings are based on revenue for design and design-related services, excluding revenue for construction management, program management, procurement and other non-design services.
Handbag company opens store in Bluffton
BLUFFTON, S.C. — Spartina 449, an upscale women’s handbag and accessory company and one of South Carolina’s top 25 fastest growing businesses, is opening its first retail store in the historic district of Bluffton.
Spartina 449, headquartered on Hilton Head Island, S.C., has primarily been a wholesale-based company that has grown its sales since 2009 and supplies its product to more than 1,400 specialty retail and boutique shops across the country.
The company also sells directly to consumers through its website, but online sales volume is small in comparison to their wholesale business
The Spartina 449 store is located at 32 Calhoun St. next to The Cottage restaurant. Hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
A formal grand-opening celebration and ribbon-cutting are planned at 2 p.m. June 5 during the Bluffton Farmer’s Market.
“We’ve grown exponentially since we started our company,” said Curt Seymour, a partner in the firm. “But this is our first brick-and-mortar retail venture.”
