Savannah among most affordable cities for retirement

Grandparents.com Inc., a website for the 50-plus market with more than 2 million registered members, has published the listing of the top six most affordable American cities for retirees to live in.

U.S. cities making the list include:

• Savannah

• Roanoke, Va.

• Spokane, Wash.

• Pittsburgh

• Louisville, Ky.

• Columbus, Ind.

According to Grandparents.com, Savannah’s mix of affordability and things to do make it a perfect retirement destination for baby boomers who want to get the most out of their retirement funds, remain active and enjoy cultural and entertainment venues.

Savannah made the list based on a combination of factors, including a cost of living that is 9 points lower than the national average, a tax rate range of 1 percent to 6 percent and a state sales tax of 4.0 percent.

“We’ve found that when it comes to retirement, people want the whole package: places that are beautiful, cultural, the living is easy and their nest egg won’t get tapped out,” said Ellen Breslau, editor in chief of Grandparents.com.

Gasoline prices stable in Savannah

Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have not moved in the past week, staying at $3.65 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah. The national average has increased 2.5 cents a gallon in the last week to $3.65, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Prices Sunday were 30.2 cents a gallon higher than one year ago and are 25.2 cents higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 12.9 cents a gallon during the last month and stands 16.5 cents higher than a year ago.

“Gas price increases have continued since early February but are likely nearing an end as oil refineries conclude seasonal maintenance and the switchover to summer gasoline is nearing completion,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan.

Meanwhile, DeHaan said, oil inventories are at their highest level ever.
