Charleston benefits firm opens Savannah office
McLaughlin Smoak & Clarke, a Charleston-based employee benefits consulting firm, is partnering with property casualty insurance broker Palmer & Cay to create a presence in Savannah.
Local insurance executive Bonnie McMillan will anchor McLaughlin Smoak’s Savannah operations and serve as the office’s senior benefits adviser. McMillan will share office space with Palmer & Cay in the Cay Building on Ellis Square.
McMillan most recently served as a benefits account executive with Wells Fargo Insurance Services in Savannah.
Fred Meyers Jewelers to hold grand opening celebration
Fred Meyer Jewelers will celebrate the grand opening of a 1,300-square-foot store within the new Savannah Kroger Marketplace at 318 Mall Blvd. beginning Wednesday.
The first 100 customers Wednesday will receive a free five-piece freshwater pearl bracelet set valued at $45. Shoppers also can enter to win a pair of diamond earrings valued at $1,099. Through April 6, the first 100 customers each day will receive a gift bag filled with jewelry cleaner, silver polishing cloths and other items.
Fred Meyer Jewelers operates 60 stores within Kroger Marketplace locations.
Master craftsman to lead woodcarving workshop
Savannah Technical College will host its historic preservation visiting artisan series, featuring international master craftsman John McRitchie, the week of April 15–19.
McRitchie will work with Savannah Tech’s historic preservation students teaching fundamental woodcarving techniques, as well as theory and practice behind hand woodcarving.
He will lead a public workshop, Introduction to Wood Carving, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19 at the historic preservation lab at Savannah Tech, 5717 White Bluff Road. The $125 workshop will cover a range of woodcarving styles and has a limited enrollment.

Bar•Food celebrates fifth anniversary with food drive
Bar•food will celebrate its fifth anniversary on April 28 with “Five Years of Fabulousness,” an indoor/outdoor party and food drive at 4523 Habersham St.
Music will begin outside at 4 p.m. Brief remarks will be made at 6 p.m., and entertainment will move inside at 8 p.m. with singer Trae Gurley. Canned goods and other nonperishable items will be collected to donate to America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia food bank.
