The Historic Savannah Foundation has donated $5,000 to Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity to help supplement funding needed to complete Habitat’s first LEED certified home on West 42nd Street.

The new single-family home is a collaborative effort on the part of Habitat for Humanity, the historic foundation, the city of Savannah, the Savannah College of Art and Design and the U.S. Green Building Council.

It features an environmentally friendly design that is affordable, sustainable and compatible. Located in the Cuyler-Brownville neighborhood, which is a National Register Historic District, the energy-efficient home will help reduce the cost burden for the new residents.

“We believe the Cuyler-Brownville neighborhood has a great future, and we couldn’t be more excited to contribute to this progressive and sustainable design project,” said foundation president and CEO Daniel Carey. “Our hope is this new Habitat home will serve as a model that can be replicated in other historic neighborhood revitalization projects across the country.”

Virginia Brown, executive director of Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity, said her organization is grateful to have the support of community partnerships such as the historic foundation.

“We have long wanted to complete a LEED certified home that will help reduce the cost burden and energy poverty for families who lack adequate housing,” Brown said. “Without the crucial and supplementary funding efforts from our community partners, this new home would not be possible.”
