Sam’s club to host cookout for food bank

Sam’s Club at 1975 E. Montgomery Crossroads will hosting a cookout Sunday to benefit Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia’s “Raise the Roof” campaign.

The cookout from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will help raise money to pay for a new freezer at Second Harvest.

Their freezer was destroyed over Labor Day weekend and the food bank is trying to raise about $175,000 to pay for deductibles and other costs left after its insurance payment was received.

In the meantime, the nonprofit is maintaining two tractor-trailer freezers that run on diesel fuel and have to be refueled every 48 hours and four freezer box trailers that run on electricity.

The freezer warehoused more than 1 million pounds of frozen meats used for distribution through its 280 partner agencies across 21 counties.
