New coffee shop and deli opens

A new coffee and shop and deli, coffee.deli at 4517 Habersham St., held its grand opening Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Co-owners Paula Letcher and Johnny Baker describe the restaurant as a sister company to bar.food, which is a couple of doors down between David’s Dry Cleaners and a River Street Sweets.

It’s open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the menu offers coffees with bagels, breakfast items and lunch items, including curry chicken salad, in-house cooked deli meats, a chopped liver and an egg and swiss on crispy cuban bread.

Nursing home wins quality recognition

Tara Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Thunderbolt has been recognized as a 2013 recipient of the Bronze–Commitment to Quality award for its dedication to improving the lives of residents through improved quality care.

The award is one of three distinctions possible through the National Quality Award program, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL).

The program honors facilities across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality care for seniors and individuals with disabilities.

“In an age of changing health care, Tara has remained committed to prioritizing quality care above all else,” said Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL.

Festival of lights seeks sponsors for 2013

The Savannah Harbor Foundation and The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa are looking for local and regional sponsors for this year’s Festival of Lights scheduled for the Christmas season on Hutchinson Island.

In 2012, more than 30,000 visitors attended the festival, which includes a light display as well as live entertainment and interactive exotic animal shows.

Afterward, the foundation was able to distribute more than $20,000 to organizations that support children and families in need.

This year’s festival will be held from Nov. 29 through Jan. 5.

Charleston company wins Beaufort contract

Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast has awarded a $10 million contract to HITT Contracting, Inc. of North Charleston, S.C., for construction of airfield security upgrades at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C.

Commanding officer Col. Brian C. Murtha said the upgrades are needed to prepare for a transition to new airplanes, the F-35 Lightning II.

The work includes installation of security fencing, motorized vehicle gates, turnstiles, associated communications lines, relocation of Drayton Street, parking spaces and rerouting of Moore Street.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2014.
